Our Opinion of SV Werder Bremen in Bundesliga 2020
Werder Bremen is a historic team in the German Bundesliga. This club has been going through many difficulties for some years now. In the past season, it seemed that Bremen would descend to the German football second division. This squad was minutes away from losing the category. However, the club was saved in the playoffs from relegation against the modest Heidenheim.
Below, you will see our opinion about the 2020/21 campaign for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.
The 2020/21 Bundesliga season for SV Werder Bremen
The green-white team finished last season 16th in the Bundesliga. They barely managed 31 points and were miraculously saved when everyone believed that their descent was safe. After a difficult season, the objective for the river islanders in the new campaign is to remain in the first division.
We must add to this that the team did not strengthen much for the 2020/21 season. Instead, a key player like Davy Klaassen left the club. This Dutch midfielder was transferred to Ajax Amsterdam in exchange for 11 million Euros.
On the other hand, the club’s best-valued player, according to Transfermarkt, Milot Rashica, could also leave soon. Rashica has been one of the Bremen’s few outstanding elements for several seasons. This talented midfielder accumulated 23 goals and 14 assists in 64 games in the past two seasons with the Green-Whites.
This player of Kosovar origin aroused the interest of several teams in Europe. So, it is very likely that Rashica will pass Bayern Leverkusen in the next transfer market.
As Rashica was expected to leave the team, Werder Bremen looked for someone to replace him with. In this regard, the club obtained youngster Tahith Chong on loan from Manchester United. The 20-year-old is Werder Bremen’s most notable addition for this season.
He is a player with excellent technique who has a lot of physical strength and speed. Without a doubt, he will be the player with the most dynamism and verticality of the squad.
Weaknesses and Strengths of SV Werder Bremen
It is not easy to find good things to say about this team. However, towards the end of the previous season, positive aspects appeared. First, Coach Kohfeldt showed flashes of tactical cunning by pairing Osako with Sargent upfront. So, these players unleashed their potential.
Besides, Werder has a good offense. With players like Sargent, Osako, Bittencourt, and Chong, this team can produce many goals.
As for weaknesses, the biggest of them is defensive.
Only Paderborn conceded more goals last season than Werder Bremen. Thus, this team must work hard to improve its defensive performance. Moreover, Werder Bremen had a hard time keeping the lead when ahead on the scoreboard. In this way, it yielded many points to his rivals.
For Werder Bremen, playing another season in the Bundesliga is almost a miracle. With the club in dire straits and the highly likely sale of Milot Rashica coming up, we can’t expect much from the Green-Whites.
Then, this season’s objective will be to remain in the top flight without suffering as they did last campaign. Furthermore, the board must try to return Werder Bremen to the place it deserves.
